Download a year’s worth of weekly action steps to improve your leadership for FREE!

Jodi Hume had a 15-yr career as COO of a growing architecture firm, but she has made a name for herself over the last decade providing on-call decision support and facilitated leadership conversations for startup founders, entrepreneurs, and executives throughout the country. Each week, Jodi hosts So Here’s My Story…, a podcast built from real stories to share poignant business takeaways with plenty of humor.

LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS

  • Leadership should never be lonely at the top—include others in the conversation.
  • Leaders need someone to talk through issues connected to their work.
  • It’s okay not to know things in your position. There’s a story we tell ourselves that everyone else has it all together, and we don’t. But that’s not true.
  • Build the skill of having smaller conversations earlier, rather than waiting till the issue becomes major.
  • “Just say that…” is a phrase to use when trying to figure out what to say to someone else. Simplistically describe to yourself what you’d like to say, and just say that to the person you need to talk to.
  • Navigating in uncertainty requires you to build the skill of what to do when you don’t know what to do. Taking action is key.

QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION

  • What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? Sitting in on weekly leadership team meetings for her job starting at 23.
  • Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” Curious, brave enough to be wrong, and well-rested (or at least not exhausted).
  • What is a question that leaders should be asking either themselves or others? Who else should be part of this conversation?
  • What book would you recommend to leaders? Fierce Conversations: Achieving Success at Work & in Life, One Conversation at a Time by Susan Scott
  • If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? Make sure that you are well-rested.
  • As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” “Why not?” because a lot of really fantastic things happen in life when you just stumble forward. And a lot of things don’t happen because some people spend too much time getting ready to be ready.
